The infrastructure was based on the European Academic Network GÉANT, and developed as a part of EGI initiative and related projects.
EGEE originated in two fields of science using computational methods: high-energy physics and life sciences, but in its final phase the environment enabled calculations in many other fields, from geology to theoretical chemistry.
In 2010, Inside the grid there were a total of around 20,000 processors available in the Grid, around 5 petabytes of disk space available, and around 20,000 simultaneous computing jobs running.
