STATUS: COMPLETED

SGIgrid (Large-scale computing and visualisation for virtual laboratory applications using an SGI cluster) – a targeted project of computing centres in Poland. The goal of the project was to develop the concept and implementation of the modern broadband services of remote access to very expensive laboratory equipment, a backup computing centre and remote data visualization.
I phase: In the research and development phase, a minimal pilot installation was built to prepare the service-application for deployment. The hardware platform of the pilot installation was a cluster of SGI computers with MIPS and Intel processors, designed for intensive computing and focused on advanced visualisation. The work covered important aspects of grid technologies. Based on the intermediate layer structure the following were created: virtual laboratory, parallel visualisation system and backup computing centre system for IMGW needs.

II phase: The deployment phase included the expansion of the hardware and software infrastructure to support the virtual laboratory system (locations in Gdansk, Lodz, Wroclaw, Krakow and Poznan). Tasks:
  • Z1.1. Development of mechanisms and policies for SGI cluster management
  • Z1.2. Construction of a pilot plant
  • Z1.3. Construction of a data archiving system
  • Z2.1. Remote access to scientific libraries
  • Z2.2. Checkpoint mechanism and process migration for IA-64 processors
  • Z2.3. Advanced visualisation tools
  • Z2.4. Utility environment supporting the development of parallel programs
  • Z3.1. Virtual laboratory and tele-immersion
  • Z3.2. Use of a back-up computing centre
  • Z4.   Participation in the development of standards for the Grid environment
  • Z5.   Super-manager predicting the time of task execution
  • Z6.   User account management with resource accounting
  • Z7.   Advanced safety system
  • Z8.   Parallel visualisation in large-scale computing
WCSS participated in the implementation of the tasks 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.3, 5 oraz 7.
